Position Summary
Assists in the overall management and training of the departments field-based patrol and protective services operations. Assumes direct responsibility for assigned shift in the absence of a Sergeant. Provides leadership and guidance to all subordinates ensuring a professional and timely response to calls for service, critical incidents, and emergency situations. Fully participates in the prevention and suppression of criminal activity, protection of life and property, and preservation of peace.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine patrols of the campus community.
- Responds to alarms, calls for service, critical incidents, and emergency situations. Investigates reported or discovered suspicious activities, unusual occurrences, and criminal offenses.
- Enforces relevant state statutes, city ordinances, and university regulations. Renders assistance to members of the campus community as is appropriate.
- Conducts field investigations.
- Interviews victims, witnesses, suspects, and complainants.
- Prepares professional reports that fully document all known facts surrounding the incident under investigation. Provides follow-up services as directed.
Self-initiates and/or assigns officers to complete departmental reports on all incidents of criminal activity, suspicious persons/circumstances, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials spills or intrusions, or other occurrences that may impact university operations or personnel.
- Helps to direct the activities of all Campus Safety Officers and support staff assigned to shift.
- Reviews and approves written reports and assignments.
- Assists Sergeant in establishing minimum staffing requirements and developing associated work schedules.
Acts as the primary Field Training Officer (FTO) for assigned shift.
- Provides guidance, mentoring, and training for all officers.
- Assists Sergeant in assigning and scheduling personnel for training.
- Ensures that training processes are completed in a timely manner.
- Recommends trainee officers for advancement to regular status and/or identifies trainee officers with developmental needs.
- Works closely with shift commander in evaluating the performance of assigned staff.
- Recommends corrective action to control inappropriate behaviors. Delivers constructive guidance to personnel not meeting departmental standards and expectations.
- Identifies positive behaviors and attributes of contributors and performers.
- Provides insight and assistance to the Sergeant in conducting annual performance reviews.
Inspects uniformed staff to ensure the condition and completeness of uniforms, equipment, appearance, and work habits.
- Makes on-the-spot corrections of all noted deficiencies.
- Consistently imparts professional standards on all personnel.
- Investigates citizen complaints of officer misconduct, discourtesy, or other inappropriate behavior.
- Conducts investigation into complaints, interviews all parties to the allegation, evaluates circumstance and evidence,
makes recommendation of action, and prepares a written report to the Sergeant and relevant senior managers.
Participates in departments community outreach and public information initiatives.
- Conducts presentations and leads discussions on Campus Safety services and programs.
- Assumes membership in various campus and community committees. Fosters positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and others.
- Acts as a departmental liaison with law enforcement, social welfare, and emergency service providers.
- Works special assignments as directed. Performs any and all related duties as required.
- Must be actively involved in the accreditation process, including, but not limited to, following the Departments policies and implementing the standard operating procedures to meet the accreditation standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In the absence of the shift commander, directly supervises staff on assigned shift.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages as well as to create and interpret graphical charts.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic, graphical, or numerical form.
- Ability to self-direct own work and capable of effectively directing the work of others.
Physical Demands:
It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety that all uniformed officers maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job related tasks that they may be called upon to do in the performance of their duties. In accordance with the policy, a job related physical and physical assessment test administered by a University approved physician will be completed upon acceptance of employment with the department. It is the responsibility of the officer to remain in such physical condition that they can successfully complete the test at any time.
- Must be able to run 100 yards, climb four flights of stairs, drag a 110 pound drag dummy twelve feet, descend four flights of stairs and run 100 yards in a time frame established by the department.
- Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and run, climb stairs and must routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds.
- During emergencies this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- As field-based personnel Coporals routinely work outside in all weather conditions.
- This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as is deemed necessary by the Sergeant or members of the departments senior management group.
- May be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.
Required Qualifications
- Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous law enforcement recruit school and/or P.O.S.T. certification desirable.
- Must be at least 21 years of age when hired.
- Successfully completed 90 days as a Campus Safety Officer at the University of Denver.
Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
Work Schedule
40-hour week. Varied hours during a 24/7 work week.

The salary grade for the position is 9.
Hourly Range
The hourly range for the position is $27.30 - $32.00.
