The IT Systems team is responsible for the implementation, operation, and support of all identity services (Active Directory, SSO, MFA), server hardware (compute and storage) supporting virtual servers, VDI, and HPC, email systems, and cloud and on-premises data center infrastructure in support of university applications, research and foundational technology services. The team is expected to understand the “Big Picture” view of the university’s computer environment and research needs to facilitate informed decision making and prioritize funding for technologies in support of DU’s mission.

Position Summary

The Systems Engineer I provides support for the University’s server environment (physical and virtual), email systems, systems monitoring, and end-user computing environments. The Systems Engineer I assists staff, faculty, students, and researchers with the use of technology in their day-to-day operations. The Systems Engineer I collaborates with university department members, where needed, to identify areas where the IT team can lend assistance in the identification, acquisition and implementation, and documentation of technical solutions.

Essential Functions

  • Server Administration: Provisioning and de-provisioning of servers, Installation of operating systems, patching operating systems
  • Active Directory administration: creation and maintenance of AD objects such as users, group policy, and security groups
  • Administration of and Tier 2 support for Microsoft 365 environment: mailboxes, Groups, OneDrive, Teams, and other M365 apps
  • Provides System Administration for the SolarWinds monitoring environment
  • Provides support for server and endpoint management, SCCM, Intune, Jamf
  • Ensures proper documentation of systems is maintained and assets are tracked
  • Helps in the creation and maintenance of KB articles for user and systems support
  • Provides recommendations for the automation of processes/tasks and continuous improvement opportunities

Other Responsibilities

  • The Systems Engineer I works closely with the University IT Help Center staff to ensure communication and support is provided to meet customer service SLA’s. This position will assist the IT Help Center during heavy impact times throughout the year, typically during the first week of classes each quarter.
  • Responsible for driving the “One DU” culture through values and customer service standards
  • Accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships through effective and timely communication
  • Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve, and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of computer science, information systems, telecommunications or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 0 - 3 years of experience with Office 365 Administration, including Exchange Hybrid
  • 0 - 3 years of experience in Server Administration in VMware and bare metal deployments
  • 0 - 3 years of experience with Active Directory Administration, GPO, Sites, and user lifecycle management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scripting ability using PowerShell, Python, JavaScript
  • Experience with VMware
  • Experience with Windows DNS and DHCP
  • Experience with ServiceNow
  • Experience in the administration of the SolarWinds monitoring system
  • Demonstrable technical documentation skills, especially within Confluence Wiki

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. evenings & weekends as needed.

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Rate

The salary rate for this position is $70,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
