The Department of Mathematics at the University of Denver consists of 12 tenure-track professors, 4 teaching professors, 4 postdoctoral scholars, approximately 80 math majors, and 25 graduate students. The department offers BA, BS, MA, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics. Tenure-track faculty conduct research in various fields of pure mathematics.

Position Summary

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Denver invites applications for an Associate Chair for Graduate Studies position. This position is a three-year term administrative appointment reporting directly to the department chair. This 12-month appointment begins at the beginning of the fiscal year July 1 –June 30.

Essential Functions

  • Is a member of the departmental Executive Committee.
  • Chairs the Graduate Committee that is concerned with all aspects of graduate curricula, including graduate courses, preliminary exams, graduate travel funding, graduate admissions and the appointment of graduate teaching assistants.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for prospective graduate students, answering questions about the program and the application process.
  • Serves as an academic advisor to graduate students prior to their finding a research advisor.
  • Handles assignment of graduate teaching assistants to courses in consultation with the department chair, and assists with the selection of Graduate Teaching Fellows.
  • Is primarily responsible for graduate admissions, including ranking and accepting applicants, in consultation with graduate committee and other faculty as needed. Also is responsible for communicating with accepted students regarding assistantship and scholarship offers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of department, college and University academic policies and procedures.
  • Strong people skills, along with the ability to work effectively with all types of people.
  • Computer-related skills especially with Windows operating programs.
  • Ability to listen and effectively communicate verbally with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
  • Adept at using judgment and discretion in situations that require sensitivity and tact.
  • Act independently to resolve issues, enhance programs, or facilitate initiatives with guidance from the department chair
  • Must be able to manage time well, particularly while managing competing priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in mathematics
  • Be a faculty member in the mathematics department at the University of Denver

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving in the Graduate Committee

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Rate

The annual salary rate for this position is $4,776.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
