The Josef Korbel School seeks an energetic and experienced Assistant Director of the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in day-to-day project direction, experience in event management and internal and external communication, knowledge and education in a disciplinary field related to international affairs, and excellent written and oral communication skills. They will also be task-oriented and detail-conscious while appropriately prioritizing and balancing a complex overall workload. The position is central to the Scrivner Institute’s ability to execute its interdisciplinary and community-facing gift-funded programming, including events and dialogue, research programs, and responsibilities related to the Master of Public Policy degree at the Korbel School.
Position Summary
The Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs seeks a strategic, experienced, and highly motivated Associate Director to lead the operational, programmatic, and strategic execution of the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy. Working under the supervision of the Director of the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy, the Associate Director will be central to the Scrivner Institute’s ability to execute its interdisciplinary gift and grant-funded programming and research. They will also play a key role in shaping the Institute’s long-term vision, identifying new funding opportunities for financial stability, and ensuring alignment with the broader goals of the Korbel School and the University of Denver. They will work in close partnership with the Director of the Scrivner Institute, Scrivner Institute affiliated faculty, the Korbel School’s Dean’s team and staff, and DU central administration while exercising a high degree of autonomy in managing the Institute’s portfolio of programs, partnerships, and initiatives.
The Associate Director will collaborate with the Director on strategic oversight of the Scrivner Institute’s operations and will have daily responsibility for all Institute activities. These activities include, but are not limited to: the planning and execution of public engagement programming and events; financial and administrative management of the Institute’s diverse funding streams; research project coordination, such as grant-identification, writing, budgeting, and post-award management; maintaining positive working relationships with donors and funders; outreach and communications with internal and external constituents; personnel oversight and supervision; and strategic planning. The Associate Director will ensure full compliance with all DU, Korbel, and funder policies, practices, and procedures.
This role requires a proactive leader with demonstrated experience in organizational management, stakeholder engagement, and policy-relevant programming. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in strategic and organizational management, day-to-day project direction, program/event coordination, grant management, financial resource allocation, excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge and education in a disciplinary field related to international affairs. They will be task-oriented, detail-conscious, and able to appropriately prioritize and balance a complex overall workload.
Essential Functions
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Collaborate with the Faculty Director to determine strategic priorities and orient the Scrivner Institute strategically, serving as a thought partner in decision-making and resource allocation.
- Manage the development and execution of a multi-year strategic plan, including high-impact programmatic priorities, research initiatives, and funding strategies. Track strategic action items, ensuring progress and foregrounding strategy in decision-making.
- Ensure effective alignment between Scrivner Institute programming and Korbel School priorities.
- Oversee strategic fiscal management through monitoring and managing the Institute’s various funding streams, prioritizing long-term sustainability while meeting short-term goals.
- Liaise with key stakeholders, conveying the Institute’s impact and importance to garner strategic collaboration and support.
Program & Project Management
- Take managerial charge of and direct the day-to-day operations and logistics of the Institute, including public events, interdisciplinary research programs, and student engagement efforts.
- Direct the design, planning, and implementation for all programming and events, including developing event content and agendas, conducting outreach to speakers, managing budgeting and accounting, and designing promotions and communications.
- Delegate project tasks to relevant team members, assigning action items and tracking progress.
- Develop new programming partnerships and maintain positive existing partner relationships, serving as an Institute liaison to nonprofit, government, and research partners.
Financial and Grant Administration
- Develop and oversee the Institute’s budget strategy, ensuring financial sustainability and effective resource allocation.
- Oversee the Institute’s financial operations, including tracking budgets, reconciling expenses, processing invoices, and managing payments, in coordination with the Korbel Business Office, ensuring compliance with all policies.
- Coordinate with appropriate stakeholders to identify and apply for new funding opportunities to ensure financial sustainability, including grants and gifts.
- Oversee Institute-affiliated research projects, tracking faculty grants and publications and aligning them with Institute research priorities.
- Manage and track Institute-affiliated grants, developing budgets in tandem with faculty, tracking expenditures and payments, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting to sponsors.
- Maintain positive relationships with relevant funders of Institute work, providing necessary updates and maintaining consistent communication channels.
Communications & Stakeholder Engagement
- Design and implement communications and outreach strategies , including engagement with key audiences including policymakers, scholars, community organizations, and funders.
- Serve as a liaison of the Institute to external and internal stakeholders, partners, and the public.
- Oversee the Institute’s digital presence, including website updates, newsletter creation, and social media strategy, to enhance the Institute’s visibility.
- Manage all external and internal communications: designing and disseminating event announcements, maintaining email lists, responding to external inquiries, and updating internal stakeholders on important matters.
Team Coordination & Institutional Collaboration
- Serve as the primary coordinator for affiliated faculty, staff, students, and other campus stakeholders while ensuring the Director is consulted and advised as necessary.
- Supervise and mentor staff and student employees: manage hiring, delegate and assign work, evaluate performance, approve timecards, provide professional development opportunities, and resolve issues.
- Liaise with other university offices, units, centers, and student groups on programming related to the Institute’s mission to align efforts and share resources.
- Serve as a key contributor and thought leader for cross-cutting Korbel School initiatives, programs, and large events related to the Scrivner Institute, including the Colorado Project and the Denver Democracy Summit.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
- Seven years of relevant previous experience demonstrating increased responsibility.
- Experience working in a university or research institute setting.
- Experience in designing and executing public-facing programs and events.
- Experience in budget and financial management.
- Experience in grant writing, tracking, reporting, and management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Google applications as well as willingness to learn new systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven skills in engagement with and outreach to relevant network and stakeholders.
- Experience developing publications, communications, and marketing materials, including contact databases, websites, and social media campaigns.
- Knowledge of DU systems including Banner Financial System, InfoEd Grants System, Concur, Content Management Systems, and Event Management Software.
- Knowledge and education in a disciplinary field related to international affairs.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $74,000 - $84,000.
