Position Summary

The University of Denver has an opening for the Director of the Science and Engineering Center (SEC) located in the Anderson Academic Commons. The Director oversees the daily operations of the SEC, which is a collaborative space staffed by undergraduate and graduate learning assistants (LAs) trained to assist undergraduate students taking first and second-year biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer sciences lecture and laboratory courses. The Science and Engineering Center is a support system where students can get guidance from LAs as well as their peers. This center is open to all DU students. The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and must also work very closely with the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Engineering, and Computer Science. 

This is a one-year, 12-month NSM-appointed position running from July through June, with the possibility of renewal. The role reports to the Associate Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and includes an administrative stipend.

Essential Functions

  • Manage undergraduate and graduate LAs SEC staff.
  • Coordinate with department chairs to identify courses to be supported and LAs to work at SEC.
  • Set and regularly update SEC hours based on the availability of LAs and publish them on the webpage.
  • Coordinate professional development for all LAs.
  • Manage SEC budget and coordinate purchases with the Dean’s Office.
  • Coordinate with department assistants and Dean’s office regarding LA background checks and timesheets.
  • Track usage and efficacy of the SEC.
  • Set policies and procedures, with Associate Dean, to build an efficient and safe learning environment for students participating in the SEC.
  • Attend university events to promote SEC to incoming students/parents.
  • Collaborate with AAC staff on event planning, space management, signage, etc.
  • Create a welcoming environment for students.
  • Manage the SEC on an abbreviated schedule during the summer quarter.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in STEM or a closely related field
  • Two years’ supervisory experience (i.e. GTA oversight)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be an appointed faculty in Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics & Astronomy. This does not include non-visiting and adjunct positions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of supervised experience
  • Three years’ experience teaching students at a collegiate level
  • Three years’ experience evaluating teaching and learning outcomes at a collegiate level

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Stipend Rate

The annual stipend for this position is $7,700.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
