Position Summary

The Senior Assistant Sports Performance Coach is responsible for the development and administration of a sound strength and conditioning program for assigned sports (Triathlon, Swimming, and WBB), teaching of safe lifting and movement techniques, and supervision of all assigned weight room and conditioning sessions consistent with departmental philosophy and methodology. Daily responsibilities include team or individual implementation of warm up, team physical monitoring, speed/agility development, recovery sessions and athlete testing/evaluation. The position may be asked to support both team and coaching staff education specific to physical stress, lifestyle management, nutrition education and general health/wellness.

This position administratively oversees the management and coordination of all efforts specific to the Sports Performance Internship Program. Responsibilities include marketing, interviewing/hiring, overseeing and delivering the education curriculum, and the direct oversight of intern performance. The Assistant Sports Performance Coach position reports directly to the Director of Sports Performance. The position will assist in maintaining compliance with all NCAA, University, and Division practices and regulations, while contributing to the continual growth and development of the University’s intercollegiate strength and conditioning program.

The position works directly within the Pioneer Health and Performance umbrella and should encourage a team based approach behind the implementation of services for performance, health, wellness and sport psychology. The Assistant Sports Performance Coach will embrace and model a positive coaching philosophy and associated techniques; insisting on a culture of respect and positive communication. 

Essential Functions

  • Developing comprehensive training programs for teams and individual varsity student-athletes based upon sport specific needs
  • Overseeing the conditioning of direct teams (under oversight) including, but not limited to development of strength, power, speed, flexibility, endurance, and recovery. Actively enhance the development of student-athlete awareness and knowledge of proper techniques through coaching and mentoring
  • Oversee team and individual based monitoring efforts within the department. Actively enhance the development of student-athlete awareness and knowledge of their development and status
  • Coordinator for the volunteer internship program. Direct oversight over the interviewing, hiring, management and continuing education of volunteer internship positions
  • Ensuring compliance with university risk management policies and procedures
  • Working directly with the Sports Medicine Department to facilitate progressive rehabilitation for student-athletes
  • Supervising the Varsity Athletic weight training facility and its use within department policies and procedures
  • Representing the Athletics Department and the University as requested in various public relations capacities
  • Maintaining current knowledge base of advances in the area of weight training, cardiovascular conditioning, speed training, and nutrition
  • Collaborating with Pioneer Health and Performance team for holistic approach to wellness

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One to two years experience as a strength coach in a collegiate setting (intern, grad asst, or PTE)
  • CSCS (NSCA) or SCCC (CSCCa) CPR/AED Certification Required or the ability to obtain prior to employment
  • Must possess knowledge in the areas of strength and conditioning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • 3+ years of relevant experiences across collegiate, professional, or private sector
  • Knowledge in athletics monitoring (GPS, IMA, HeartRate/HRV, force plates )

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Hours will vary depending on sports and seasons.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $58,000-$68,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
