Position Summary

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law seeks to hire a fellow within its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), which provides legal assistance to low income individuals involved in proceedings before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Colorado Department of Revenue, the United States District Court, and the U.S. Tax Court in matters involving collections, tax-related audits, and appeals. Widely viewed as one of the premier low income taxpayer clinics in the nation, the LITC provides outstanding legal representation to clients and trains students in skills relevant to expert and ethical practice in the realm of tax-related controversies and disputes.

The term of the fellowship would be two years, with support provided through the Tax Analysts Public Service Fellowship, funded and administered by the American Bar Association Section on Taxation.

Essential Functions

The successful candidate would undertake the following principal responsibilities:

  • Work alongside the Director of the LITC in overseeing all aspects of administration of the LITC, including but not limited to conducting outreach to clients, selecting cases, reporting to funding sources, and maintaining files.
  • Provide expert and ethical representation of clients in the realm of tax-related controversies and disputes, including but not limited to tax compliance and collection.
  • Effectively respond to IRS or CDOR letters.
  • Train students, consistent with best practices in the realm of clinical pedagogy, such as lawyering skills, professional development and ethical practice, employing clinical teaching methods.
  • Work to promote the LITC to internal and external stakeholders, including alumni and members of the bench and bar.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. degree
  • An active license to practice law in the state of Colorado (or the ability to waive in)
  • Experience in representing individual tax clients

Preferred Qualifications

  • M. Tax or LL.M. degree (in Tax)
  • Experience in proceedings before the IRS, the Colorado Department of Revenue, the United States District Court, and/or the U.S Tax Court

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $75,000-$85,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
