Position Summary 

The Hilltoppers Assistant Coach will work in conjunction with the Hilltopper Head Coach as a leader of the program.  
 
The Assistant Coach is responsible for coaching the Gold group and other training group(s) as assigned, creating corresponding annual and multi-year training progressions, communicating to members, completing meet entries for assigned training groups, assisting in organizing and supervising Hilltopper competitions, management and maintenance of facility/timing equipment, coordinating volunteers, and updating the Hilltoppers website.  
 
This role requires knowledge of competitive swimming, understanding of long term athlete development, and a commitment to skill and athletic development as the cornerstone of the team’s success. Coach must have a willingness to learn and improve. Coaches must embrace the role the Hilltoppers program plays in scope of the University of Denver and in the Colorado Swimming community. 

Essential Functions 

Coaching

  • Directly oversee assigned training groups 
  • Design, collaborate and implement annual and multi-year athlete development plans 
  • Ensure continuity of training groups and help facilitate smooth athlete progression 
  • Write workouts and instruct athletes on a daily basis  
  • Parent and athlete communication written and verbal 
  • Attend local and away competitions as assigned 

Administrative/Team Management 

  • Create weekly newsletter 
  • Assist with Meet Schedule Selection & Design 
  • Complete Team entries for training groups that coach oversees 
  • Consolidate, cross check entire team entries and submit to meet host.  
  • Point person and moderator for team social media accounts 
  • Coordination of Volunteers (5,000 hours+ per year)  
    • Create Registration for Home + Away Meet volunteers 
    • Tracking Hours 
  • Create Meet entry member files + work with operations Manager to build Rec Trac sections for Hilltopper member meet registration 
  • Assist with Staff Management + Training 
  • Order awards for meets 
  • Help Create monthly practice calendars 
  • Assist with Team Marketing 
  • Maintain Team Records 
  • Assist with Staff Management and Training 
  • Assist with Club representation at Colorado Swimming LSC Meetings (BOD, coaches meetings, etc.) 

Facility 

  • Ensure Facility Timing Equipment is in working order  
  • Help with venue set-up and breakdown 
  • Technical Troubleshooting in timing system 
  • Assist with Equipment Repair 

Home Events 

  • Entry Chair Position- receive, import, organize meet entries from teams attending home swim meets. 
  • Meet Director for home swim meets as assigned. 
  • Assist and/or lead set-up and breakdown for home events 
  • Assist in organizing hospitality for coaches and officials. 
  • Assist in management of home events including but not limited to:  
    • Attending event/logistics meetings in advance of home meets 
    • Scheduling parking attendants 
    • Leading crowd management when not on deck coaching 

Travel Competitions 

  • Act as lead person for Team Travel or assist with Meet Travel- 3-4 Trips per season (12-15 days)  
  • Responsible for driving University vehicles 
  • Responsible for chaperoning during away meet travel 
  • Assist in booking travel accommodations/rental vehicles for away competitions. 
  • Assist in arranging for team catering/meals during away competition.

Required Qualifications 

  • Coach Member in good standing with USA Swimming 
  • Experience in competitive Swimming (5+years preferred) 
  • Interested in educational growth and professional development 
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written 
  • Value the importance of team culture and work within framework of team philosophy 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Coaching or Related Field 
  • Certifications in the following: Water Safety Instructor 

Working Environment 

  • Standard office environment. 
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high. 
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate. 

Physical Activities 

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time. 
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus. 

Work Schedule 

37.5 hours/week, nontraditional, evenings & weekends expected.

Salary Grade Number 

The salary grade for the position is 8. 

Salary Range 

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$55,000. 

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
