About the role
The Workshops Services Team Leader is responsible for the overall operation and management of the Council’s fleet workshop, ensuring the effective maintenance, servicing, and repair of all vehicles and plant equipment.

The position contributes to the strategic planning of fleet asset management, implements best practices in workshop operations, and leads a skilled team of mechanics and workshop staff to deliver high-quality service. The Workshop Services Team Leader also promotes a positive safety culture, ensures compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements — including responsibilities under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and Chain of Responsibility (CoR) — and drives continuous improvement in workshop performance and safety.

The role requires the ability to manage operational, compliance, and leadership responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining a strong focus on customer service, safety, and resource efficiency.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead a high-performing workshop team of mechanics and technicians, promoting a culture of safety, accountability, inclusivity, and professional development.
  • Oversee day-to-day fleet workshop operations, including preventative maintenance, repairs, compliance, and reporting to ensure efficient and cost-effective service delivery.
  • Support strategic planning and budgeting, helping deliver the unit’s business plan and driving performance through effective resource management and data-informed decisions.
  • Ensure legislative and policy compliance, particularly in areas such as safety, environmental standards, HVNL, and Chain of Responsibility.
  • Collaborate across departments and with internal/external stakeholders to support project delivery and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide expert fleet and maintenance advice, contributing to the development and review of fleet strategies aligned with organisational goals.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have relevant qualification in Vehicle Mechanics and/or significant professional experience in Vehicle Mechanics in a comparable organisation.  

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrated people management skills and leadership to support, influence, and foster a positive work environment.
  • Well-developed planning and time management ability.
  • Demonstrated skills in business planning and budget management.
  • In-depth understanding of Chain of Responsibility (CoR) and Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) requirements as they relate to workshop operations and vehicle maintenance.
  • Understanding of Mechanical Systems
  • Knowledge of legislation, regulations, and policies in field of expertise.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence.
