The Victorian Government is upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway. These changes will slash travel times and improve public transport in Melbourne’s east.


Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.

The role:
As our Alliance continues to grow, we are looking an Environmental Advisor to join the team in a permanent role.
You will be responsible for ensuring accurate, timely and complete quality control of the project under the direction of the Project Quality Manager.

Your every day:
• Ensure the requirements of the Quality Management Plan are established, implemented, maintained and communicated on the Project and that responsibilities for implementing the plan are understood by the project team.  
• Promote a positive quality culture and provide or source training where necessary to ensure specified requirements are being met.  
• Fully understand and interpret the quality requirements and deliverables for the project.  
• Assist the Project Quality Lead with the implementation of the Project Quality Plan and the development of quality related deliverables.  
• Provide technical advice/support to the Project Quality Manager on quality related matters.  
• Assist engineering team with preparing Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), inspection checklists and work packs to ensure quality requirements are captured.  
• Participate at regular construction / quality team meetings.  
• Coordinate closure and ensure completeness of all construction work packages.  
• Assist the Project Quality Lead by reviewing and verifying compliance of QA records and deliverables prior to being compiled into the Manufacturer’s Data Report (MDR) or handover package.  
• Assist the Project Quality Manager in preparing and carrying out of surveillance audits on suppliers, subcontractors and production to ensure satisfactory implementation of applicable management systems and compliance to specified contract deliverables.  
• Verify that subcontractor/supplier documents conform to project specification/standard requirements.  
• Ensure Corrective Actions and Non-conformances are registered upon identification.  
• Actively monitor the project Corrective Actions and Non-conformance Registers to ensure timely close out and measure the effectiveness to preventive actions.  
• Investigate all non-conformances with efficiency and ensure debriefs are conducted and corrective actions are closed out.  
• Maintain up-to-date register of calibration certificates and ensure inspection, measuring and test equipment is within calibration or removed from use.  
• Provide data as required to the Project Quality Manager for the monthly Quality Reports by the due date.  
• Observe safe systems of work relevant to your work area and report potential hazards or near misses.  

Who are you?
• Bachelors’ Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• More than 3 years’ experience in a Quality Advisor/Engineer role preferably based on a major infrastructure, rail or road project
• More than 5 years’ experience working within the construction industry preferred
• Experience developing ITP’s, Work Instructions and quality checklists
• Ability to interpret specifications, contract requirements and design drawings
• Site-based experience completing process control inspections site to complete process control inspections.
• Auditing support for Project supplier and construction works auditing support
• Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
