The Victorian Government is upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway. These changes will slash travel times and improve public transport in Melbourne’s east.

Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.

The role:
As our Alliance continues to grow, we are looking for Civil and/or Structures Site Engineers to join our delivery teams across the packages.

Permanent opportunities available in multiple scopes for our construction partners eg. Structures, Civil, Earthworks and Drainage, Piling and Pavements etc.

Reporting to a Senior Project Engineer/Project Manager, you will be responsible for procurement of all necessary plant, equipment and materials as necessary, to perform works as directed. You will also assist Supervisory staff and Engineers within your scope in day-today operations, quality and safety monitoring documents.

Your every day:
• Regularly review the delivery schedule and report on any deviation.   
• Assist with management of subcontractors   
• Provide support to Project Engineers and Commercial team where required for all areas of delivery  
• Understand design progress, constructability review and process for design review, contribute to improvement of the overall design and constructability of area of work  
• Provide input in construction planning and recommending changes to design details to increase construction efficiency and reduce costs.  
• Ensure Temporary works procedures are followed and necessary controls are in place, including permits and appropriately qualified supervision to perform the works
• Delivering safely or not at all, there can be no compromise  
• Participate in Safety walks participate in Collective insights, Positive Investigations and Fatal and Severe Risk Reviews  
• Produce SWMS in conjunction with supervisors, labour, and project engineers.  
• Ensure necessary certifications/authorities are obtained prior to commencing works or hazardous operations, temporary works and craneage operations  
• Communicate potential environmental issues to relevant project members.  
• Monitor construction progress and costs against schedule and budget. Produce productivities regularly to demonstrate the position clearly of the progress of works
• Verify subcontractor conformance to contractual requirements, quality standards and scope 
• Monitor the construction progress against the programme and productivity. Produce regular (daily) productivities for reporting and accurate data for decision making. Identify potential productivity improvements or constraints that may impact construction and the schedule.   
• Prepare short- and long-term construction planning for works and accurate reporting and mitigation measures where required.  
• Prepare and manage quality documentation.  
• Prepare & control ITP’s, samples/prototypes, lot registrations, inspection & tests, non-conformance, conformance certification and maintenance of traceable verification records.

Who are you?
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Construction or similar
• More than 4 years of experience working in a site-based role in Construction, preferably on a road, rail, or major infrastructure project
• Experience delivering Civil or Structures scopes with technical knowledge around design, planning and construction methods
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with all stakeholders and sub-contractors
• Proven experience maintaining documentation and systems for Quality, Safety and Environment
• Proven experience in tracking daily progress, productivity, reporting and planning 4-5 week lookahead
• Commitment to Health and Safety protocols
Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
