The Victorian Government is upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway. These changes will slash travel times and improve public transport in Melbourne’s east

Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.

The role:
As our Alliance continues to grow, we are looking a Project Engineer Civil/Structures to join the Delivery team in a permanent role.

Reporting to the scope Project Manager, you will ​coordinate on-site construction engineering activities to achieve project cost, time, quality and sustainability objectives safely. 

Your every day:

  • Coordinate and administer construction engineering activities to ensure that project plans are implemented in accordance with designs and specifications. 
  • Interpret designs for implementation in construction projects, review and make recommendations for improvements, as appropriate. 
  • Support the procurement process for contractors with the Commercial / Procurement team. 
  • Assist with preparation of site construction budgets and reports. 
  • Monitor construction progress for the area of work against programme and budget and report to the Senior Project Engineer and Project Manager. 
  • Detail the mid and short-range planning and monitor schedules. 
  • Ensure that the require Quality Control processes are created, maintained and used correctly (ITP’s, ITR’s, etc). 
  • Supervise designated employees and contractors, including assigning tasks and assisting with contract reviews. 
  • Provide direction and supervision for Site Engineers and other direct reports, as required. 
  • Observe safe systems of work relevant to the work area and report potential hazards and environmental risks 
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with all key stakeholders relating to the area of work.  
  • Ensure appropriate resources are allocated for the project to ensure required productivity levels are achieved.
  • Ensure the HSE standards are understood and upheld. 
  • Ensure all works are completed in accordance with the client quality requirements and Australian standards / codes.  
  • Positively influence the quality culture and ensure the project quality management plan and related processes are fully implemented and adhered to by the project team. 
  • Foster a culture of respect for the environment and communities in which we work to minimise impacts.  

Who are you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • More than 5 years’ experience in a site-based Engineering position, preferably delivering Infrastructure, Rail, Roads or Major Projects valued >$250M
  • Experience delivering Civil or Structures scopes
  • Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
  • Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or Permanent Residency required, as this is a permanent, full-time position
