Dependent on age; Base Salary from $47,292 plus Super, potential area allowances and yearly progression.

We’re especially keen to hear from applicants who have completed their Cert II in Engineering pathways (Mech)/Cert II in Electrotechnology (Elec) and have experience working in industrial environments. You must also hold, or be working towards, an Australian Driving Licence.

Even if you don’t meet all the criteria 100%, we want to hear from you!

About the role:

Starting in February 2026, our 4-year program offers you to chance to start your career as a Mechanical Apprentice with Hydro Tasmania. You will:

  • Gain BIG skills from on-the-job training and a TAFE qualification
  • Work as part of an experienced and supportive team
  • Work flexibly with flexible work arrangements to support you
  • Receive competitive salary and benefits such as working through an accelerated remuneration program
  • Contribute to building a clean energy future for Tasmania and Australia!

Mechanical Fitter Apprentice positions and locations available:

  • West Coast (Based at Tullah)
  • Trevallyn/Poatina
  • Derwent (Across the Upper and Lower Derwent and Gordon)
  • Cambridge Workshop
  • Tammar Vally Power Station Bell Bay

Depending on where you're based, you’ll receive a location allowance, putting more money in your pocket just for showing up to work in some of Tasmania’s most iconic and beautiful regions.

Area Allowance by Location

  • Trevallyn/Poatina - $2,700
  • Derwent - $5,772
  • West Coast - $20,000

But that’s not all! some of our locations offer even more lifestyle perks, like a fortnightly Rostered Day Off (Trevallyn/Poatina, Mersey Forth and Cambridge Workshop), giving you extra time to recharge, or a 4-day work week (West Coast and Derwent) so you can enjoy long weekends, every weekend! Shortly after submitting your application, you will be sent an online assessment through the Vervoe platform. It includes some competency-based questions to help us get a better idea of your skills and how they align with what we look for in our Apprentices. This step needs to be completed by 9am Friday 29th August,
