ABOUT THE ROLE
The Education Officer - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education is a member of the Improvement Learning and Wellbeing Team - Learning K-12. This role has been created to provide additional support to Catholic schools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Working under the direction of the Professional Officer, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education within the Directorate Services and in close collaboration with Principals, teachers, Aboriginal Education Assistants and other staff from the Catholic Education Office, the role will identify and implement innovative strategies that will lead to improved educational and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

An ongoing focus of the system of schools has been to make Catholic schools places that welcome and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life, history and culture, especially through building staff cultural awareness and understanding while encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student enrolment and family engagement.
Responsibilities of this role includes:
- Supporting schools in the development and implementation of Personalised Learning Plans for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- Supporting schools with the case management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students requiring additional support for their learning and wellbeing.
- Collaborating with Catholic Education Office personnel in School Improvement Services to support the learning and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- Engaging with a range of data to support intervention including AECD, Best Start, Literacy and Numeracy Progressions, NAPLAN, Behaviour and Attendance.
- Building the cultural competency of teaching and support staff to more effectively support the learning and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- Building the capacity of Aboriginal Education Assistants.
- Implementing system policies and initiatives related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
- Supporting all teachers to address Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures through the curriculum.
ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES:
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background.
- Be a qualified teacher with proven capacity as a leader of learning with a good understanding of quality differentiated classroom practice.
- Be supportive of the ethos of a Catholic school and be able to represent Catholic Education in the wider community.
- Have a good understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in the NSW Syllabuses for the Australian Curriculum.
- Have skills in analysing and using data to support student learning and wellbeing.
- Be confident at working in both Primary and Secondary school settings.
- Have excellent communication skills and be capable of building effective professional networks.
- Have the ability to interact positively with students, families, staff and a range of service providers.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CLEARANCE
This role is classified as a child related work and therefore we require a working with children clearance to be completed prior to your commencement with us.
