Top End Technical Specialist

Purpose of the role is to… • Be an experienced multi-skilled Mechanical Engineer within the Top End Dynamics group. • Provide extensive knowledge and experience in valvetrain and geartrain design. • Challenge the current design and simulation processes to ensure we develop and improve our overall understanding to ensure optimal performance and robust design • Be innovative and able to contribute with ideas and solutions which will allow the performance development and reliability of Top End valvetrain and geartrain. • Work alongside the Top End Group Team Leader to define the roadmap for the teams development and journey to meet the demands of current and new technical regulations.

Be skilled at…

  • Mechanical design of both valvetrain and geartrains for high performance ICE.
  • Component failure investigation and analysis with solution based mindset for rapid and long term containment
  • Analysing rotating and reciprocating mechanical systems to provide design direction, operating limits and failure investigation
  • Analysing mechanical, thermal and dynamic fatigue loadings
  • Correlating simulations to existing real world data
  • Devising robust, well-designed tests to correlate dynamic and kinematic simulations.
  • Create novel/inventive analysis approaches that reduce time between iterations to support fast moving failure investigations

Have experience of…

  • Design of complete valvetrain and geartrian assemblies with outstanding understanding of the loads, dynamics and theory.
  • Have expertise in Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) and expert or good knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and their applications in mechanical systems inclusive of model construction, loadcase determination and technical recommendation
  • Preferential experience of analysing valvetrain and geartrain components and assemblies
  • Preferential experience using Excite or Dymola MBD, CATIA & Abaqus

Demonstrate knowledge of…

  • Vibration theory, understanding and interpretation of torsional vibration measurement data
  • Excellent knowledge of mechanical design, systems and material properties
  • Preferential knowledge of ICE

Hold these qualifications…

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree (or equivalent), Grade 2:1 or higher


  • Conscientious methodical problem solver.
  • Self-motivated and results driven.
  • Able to work as a part of a team, clearly communicate complex technical topics to different areas of the business in a fast moving work environment.
  • Constantly striving to improve/develop.
