About the Portfolio
The Academic Division has a critical role in enabling and supporting learning and teaching success. The purpose of the Academic System will be to achieve transformative educational outcomes for students and communities, ensure that all courses are mission-aligned, design and performance optimized.
Seven critical elements will serve specific purposes in the System and include Courses, Capacity, Capability, Time, Governance, Management, and Technology and processes. The system will deliver mission aligned educational content, allowing us to accelerate the transition we need to make in Tasmania.
About the Opportunity
Providing strategic leadership to ensure the University’s Academic System delivers transformative educational experiences across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, this role leads the Learning and Teaching Portfolio, encompassing curriculum design, academic workforce planning, capability development, and system-wide performance optimisation.
The position is responsible for actively managing the performance of the University’s Learning and Teaching system and leading an intergenerational change in academic workforce capability, ensuring academic staff are empowered to innovate, lead, and adapt to a rapidly evolving educational landscape. A key focus is fostering integration between Academic Units and the central learning and teaching function, ensuring alignment with the University’s mission to create a distinctive, regionally delivered student experience. The Pro Vice-Chancellor will champion a culture of excellence in curriculum and teaching practice, informed by data-driven performance oversight and continuous improvement initiatives.

The role operates in a dynamic and complex environment, requiring a strategic leader who can anticipate future capability needs, read what is not yet on the page and translate emerging trends into actionable strategies to build workforce capability and a high-performing learning and teaching system.
The role also requires active engagement with external regulatory bodies and Academic Senate to ensure academic quality and accreditation are maintained. By embedding a high-performance culture, the PVC will directly impact the University’s ability to attract and retain exceptional academic staff, optimise workload models, and drive sustainable workloads, finances and excellence in learning and teaching.
