About the opportunity

The Menzies Institute for Medical Research is looking for an Administrative Officer – Medical Coder to join their Tasmanian Cancer Registry (TCR) team.

The Tasmanian Cancer Registry (TCR) is responsible for collecting information on all malignant neoplasms in Tasmanian residents and producing annual cancer statistics reports.

TCR sits within the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Menzies) at the University of Tasmania. Menzies is one of Australia’s leading health and medical research institutes.

Menzies exists to improve human health and wellbeing by performing excellent basic, clinical and population health research that focuses on the major diseases affecting the Tasmanian community.

As our new Administrative Officer, you will be required to register, code and trace cancer notifications, and provide high level administrative support for TCR Activities.

What you’ll do:

  • Review pathology reports, registration forms and death records to determine completeness, accuracy and eligibility for registration.
  • Code data according to local, national and international coding standards for cancer topography and morphology using ICD-O3 classification system.
  • Process hospital, death and interstate notifications of cancer including undertaking data-linkage to match hospital and death records to existing cancer notifications.
  • Utilise specified databases to enter demographic and clinical details.
  • Liaise with clinicians, medical records and pathology laboratory personnel.

­What we’re looking for:

  •  Completion of a diploma level qualification with relevant work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience in medical coding or understanding of medical terminology and human anatomy.
  • Good interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a range of people.
  • Practical experience with computer software including word processing, database entry and data management skills, email and Internet packages.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to act independently using initiative, judgement and discretion, particularly when dealing with matters of a confidential nature.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 4 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $91,488 (pro rata) comprising base salary within the range of 73,814 to $ 78,195 plus 17% superannuation
