About the opportunity

Join the University of Tasmania's Health team as a Senior Technical Officer, where you will lead the delivery of high-quality technical and laboratory support that underpins practical learning experiences across multiple health disciplines. Reporting to the Laboratory Operations Lead, you will coordinate a team of technical staff, collaborate with academic and professional colleagues, and ensure laboratories and specialist teaching spaces are equipped, safe and ready for student learning. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a technically skilled professional who enjoys mentoring others, driving continuous improvement, and contributing to outstanding teaching and learning outcomes in a dynamic health education environment.

What you’ll do:

• Coordinate and provide operational oversight of technical support staff to ensure effective, efficient technical service delivery for practical teaching activities.
• Liaise and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, both academic and professional to ensure laboratory and other ‘non classroom’ based teaching and learning activities are effectively planned and delivered.
• Develop capability of new and existing technical staff through agile leadership, mentoring, induction and performance planning and review.
• Support high quality teaching and learning experiences by providing high-level technical advice in methodologies and instrumentation.
• Support a safe working environment by assisting with WHS inductions, documentation, and communication of safety requirements, while proactively identifying hazards and contributing to risk mitigation activities.

­What we’re looking for:

• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and oversee the work of others collaboratively, to support effective service delivery.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and meet internal stakeholder requirements within budget, WHS and other operating parameters, interact effectively and positively with external organisations and individuals and respond to changing needs.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse and solve complex technical and non-technical problems and to adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks.
• Demonstrated sound understanding and practical experience in the use maintenance and operational repair of experimental and diagnostic equipment and instrumentation.

Qualifications and Licences:

• Current Working with Vulnerable People Registration or a willingness to obtain.
• UTAS Fire Warden training or willingness to obtain.
• Provide First Aid Qualification.
• Preferable: Qualification in Risk Management and Assessment.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 plus 17% superannuation.
