Applications are invited for appointment as Research Assistant Professor (RAP) / Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF) in the HKU Research Hub of Population Studies (the Population Hub)Faculty of Social Sciences (several posts) (Ref.: 531279), to commence as soon as possible, on a 1 to 3-year temporary basis for PDF, or on a 1-year temporary or a 2 to 3-year fixed-term basis for RAP, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.  Those with relevant post-doctoral work experience or an excellent publication track record may be considered for appointment as RAP.

This position will immerse the appointees in both academic research and teaching in the multi-disciplinary team of the HKU Research Hub of Population Studies (https://www.socsc.hku.hk/rhps/) within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The appointees will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Involve in on-going research projects of the Population Hub
  • Draft proposals, reports, and presentations relevant to the projects
  • Perform advanced quantitative data analysis
  • Publish high-quality academic papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Mentor junior research staff
  • Teach one UG/TPG course per year, if required
  • Support and perform other duties as assigned

 

Requirements

The appointees are expected to have:

  • A Ph.D. degree in the Social Sciences, Sociology, Demography, Statistics, Public Health, Social Work, or a relevant discipline
  • A strong quantitative background and extensive experience in managing and analysing large and complex datasets; expertise in Computational Social Science, proficiency in longitudinal analyses, multilevel modelling, data visualisation, and state-of-the-art statistical models would be an advantage
  • The ability to develop a body of high-quality publications in scholarly journals with global impact
  • The ability to multi-task and work under a tight schedule to meet project deadlines
  • The ability to work well independently and collaboratively as a team
  • A strong commitment to teaching and training activities in the Population Hub and the Faculty
  • A strong sense of self-motivation, responsibility, and work ethics
  • Good analytical, communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  For RAP, the appointment on fixed term will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.
