Senior Curatorial Assistant (at the rank of Senior Facilities Assistant) in the University Museum and Art Gallery (Ref.: 532106) (to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance)

The Role

Working in UMAG’s Curatorial Department, the appointee will assist in special exhibition projects and conduct collection related research. Individuals who pay attention to detail, have strong interpersonal skills and able to demonstrate ability to work independently with initiative are encouraged to apply.

Detailed Responsibilities

The appointee will focus on collection- and exhibition-related work.

Collection work

The appointee will demonstrate an understanding of art history and a proactive attitude in researching museum objects.

  • Curatorial research: Read and write about museum objects.
  • Collection work: Enhance and verify data in the museum object database.
  • Collection maintenance: Assist with creating object condition reports.

Exhibition work

  • Exhibition research: Conduct research on topics related to museum exhibitions.
  • Translation: Help translate exhibition-related texts.
  • Educational support: Assist in organising educational events, such as lectures and round-table discussions.
  • Lead guided tours. 

Qualifications and Qualities

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Art History, preferably in the field of Chinese art, with at least 3 years of full-time relevant experience in research and curating art objects, gained at museums, art organisations, or academic institutions with strong passion for the cultural sector;
  • A Level 4 result or above in both Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma or Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent;
  • Solid knowledge of Chinese Arts and Art History;
  • Familiarity with art historical terminology and methodologies;
  • Proficiency in computer software, including Zoom, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Good organisational and communication skills with excellent command of both written English and Chinese as well experience in translating between the two languages; and
  • Fluency in English and Cantonese, and proficiency in Putonghua.

Rotating weekend schedule applies and working irregular hours may be required occasionally. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview and a written test.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary.
