Founded in 1927, the School of Chinese at HKU boasts a long and distinguished history as one of the university’s oldest academic units. We run our own peer-reviewed HKU Journal of Chinese Studies (formerly Journal of Oriental Studies). It is a renowned bilingual semi-annual academic journal specializing in Chinese and Sinophone studies. Since its establishment in 1954 (JOS), the Journal has been recognized as a leading publication both locally and internationally, publishing over 50 volumes of articles and book reviews on a wide range of subjects in language, literature, history, philosophy, religion, and translation, etc. For details, please visit website: https://www.hkujcs.hku.hk.

 

To support the School’s research strategy and centenary development plan, we are inviting a dedicated and capable candidate to join the HKUJCS editorial team as an Editorial Assistant who works full-time or part-time, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

 

Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or higher, preferably in a field in Chinese Studies, such as literature, language, history, philosophy, religion, or similar disciplines.  
  • Proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) and English, with excellent reading and writing skills in both languages. Knowledge of major East Asian or European languages is a plus.
  • Prior experience in academic publishing, including familiarity with editorial processes; professional knowledge of typesetting is advantageous.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to effectively coordinate with authors, editors, reviewers, and other stakeholders involved in the publication process.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks efficiently, and meet deadlines

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate the regular activities of the editorial board and oversee the submissions, peer reviews, and communication with authors and reviewers.
  • Liaise with editors and the publisher to facilitate internal/external reviews, editing, proofreading, and initial typesetting.
  • Update and maintain the Journal’s website and social media platforms (such as Facebook, WeChat, etc.)
  • Manage the Journal’s subscriptions and organize related events.
  • Promote the Journal through outreach activities, including collaborations with major journal indexes and online databases.

 

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. Immediate availability is preferred, with the appointment commencing as soon as possible for up to 2 years, and the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
