Radiation Protection Officer (at the rank of Technical Manager I/II) in the Safety Office (Ref.: 533066) (To commence as soon as possible, on a temporary full-time contract for 6 months)
Applicants should possess (i) a Bachelor’s degree or above in Physical Sciences or related disciplines; ii) a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience; and (iii) sound knowledge of relevant statutory regulation and requirements, or demonstrated potential to acquire such knowledge. They should have initiative and decisiveness; good organizational and planning skills in delivering expected outcomes on time and to the required standard; and the ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive professional working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. They should also write effectively and be able to present complex technical information in a clear and concise way. Practical experience in undertaking research in mainland China will be an advantage.
The appointee will report directly to the Director of Safety, and is expected to provide expert advice and services to the University community on radiation safety matters. He/She will ensure the provisions of the Radiation Ordinance and the regulations made under it are complied with; oversee the renewal of licences held by the University for work with radioactive substances; control all acquisitions and disposal of radioactive substances and irradiating apparatus; and provide specialist advice on laboratory design, risk assessments, accident and incident investigations, and safety training for radiation workers. They will be responsible for arranging and delivering our English-medium certificate courses in radiation protection, held twice a year.
The appointee will also oversee a small team of Technical Officers providing radiation protection services to research departments including transportation of radioactive materials, dosage monitoring, wipe testing, functional tests and collection of waste; coordinate and develop laboratory design guidelines, based on the existing guidelines and best practice.
