Applicants should possess a Master’s degree or higher in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields. A minimum of two years of relevant hands-on experience in nucleic acid analysis, electrochemistry, or related biomedical fields is required. Applicants should have a strong understanding of electrochemical principles, including voltammetry, amperometry, potentiometry, and impedance spectroscopy. Proficiency in operating electrochemical instrumentation and data analysis software is essential, as well as experience in sensor surface modification and characterization techniques. Applicants should also have solid knowledge and experience in nucleic acid amplification techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, LAMP, RPA) and nucleic acid contamination control. Familiarity with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and diagnostic assay development is a plus. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and communication skills are critical, along with fluency in both English and Chinese. Those with less experience and/or lower qualifications may be considered as Research Assistant II.

The appointees will contribute to the development, optimization, and execution of nucleic acid testing protocols, ensuring accurate and reliable pathogen detection for public health surveillance. They will be responsible for developing and optimizing electrochemical methods for the detection and quantification of nucleic acids in environmental, biological, and clinical samples. They will also be involved in modifying and characterizing electrochemical sensors and biosensors tailored for nucleic acid analysis. Additional duties encompass performing nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and preparation of suitable for electrochemical and other amplification-based detection techniques. The appointees will develop, optimize, and validate molecular assays such as PCR, qPCR, LAMP, and other nucleic acid amplification-based detection methods, while thoroughly documenting experimental procedures, results, and protocols to ensure reproducibility and compliance with quality standards. Enquiries about the duties of the posts should be sent to Mr. Eric Yip at yiperic@hku.hk.  Information about the School can be obtained at https://sph.hku.hk/.
