Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/ Assistant Professor (several posts) in the School of Future Media (Ref.: 534480), to commence in January 2027 or from as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment rank will be determined according to qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Assistant Professors will be appointed on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for direct tenure subject to the University’s approval.

School of Future Media

The School of Future Media (SFM) strives to advance education, research, and creative work across the fields of journalism, documentary film making, global creative industries, and AI applications across media fields and genres, such as film making, games, and animation.  Applicants with outstanding tech and AI training, teaching and research experience could be considered for joint appointment with the HKU School of Computing and Data Science.  

The SFM takes an integrated approach to explore the intersections of AI, technology, humanities and the creative arts to foster multidisciplinary research and creative production. The Positions

The positions are open to all areas in one or more of the following or related fields, including but not limited to: 

  • AI and Generative AI in filmmaking 

  • Animation and game design 

  • Immersive and interactive media  

  • Computer Vision 

  • Data journalism, data analytics, & technologies 

  • Business and finance journalism  

  • Digital humanities  

  • AI applications in journalism practices 

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation  

  • Global Creative Industries with expertise in one or more of the following areas: gaming and digital humanities, visual arts and museum studies, music and performing arts, visual communications.  

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in film production and film studies, journalism and media studies, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and related fields 

  • A strong commitment to excellence in research and teaching and proven qualities of academic leadership. 

  • A solid track record in research and curriculum development  

  • Outstanding and internationally recognised research achievements are essential for appointment at Professor level

Duties and Responsibilities

The appointees are expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development, supervise postgraduate students, conduct high-quality research, and undertake administrative duties at SFM. 

What We Offer

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
