The University of Hong Kong Libraries (HKUL) is the oldest and yet a very innovative academic library in Hong Kong.  With the largest collections and most comprehensive services among local academic libraries, HKUL offers aspiring library leaders a most desirable training ground. We are looking for high-potential candidates with passion to develop a professional career in the University Libraries.  

The Role

HKUL will provide comprehensive on-the-job training with job rotation across the core library divisions for the appointees to acquire essential knowledge and skills to build a solid career at University Libraries, as well as to gain practical experience in different functional areas such as acquisitions, cataloguing and metadata, loan and user services, archives and special collections, digital and physical preservation, learning and research support, and administrative services. They will participate in library projects and contribute new ideas to improve current operations or plan new initiatives. Information about the University Libraries can be obtained at https://lib.hku.hk.  

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Deliver customer service at the library, including membership, circulation, and research support; 

  • Learn effective shelf management to help organise and maintain library collections; 

  • Assist with the setup and operation of learning spaces and maker space facilities, contributing to event and AV logistics; 

  • Support researchers by maintaining profiles and records, and participate in reporting related to research impact; 

  • Develop skills in preparing and analysing learning materials, including basic data tasks and visualization; 

  • Participate in teaching and outreach, including but not limited to providing  guided tours to exhibitions and interacting with visitors; 

  • Contribute to physical preservation, including basic repair, binding, and record-keeping; 

  • Support digitisation projects and metadata tasks, such as data cleansing and image processing; 

  • Gain exposure to ordering processes, subscription management, vendor liaison, and troubleshooting access issues; 

  • Assist in cataloguing, bibliographic searching, and authority checking for library materials; 

  • Maintain and update records for print and electronic resources, compiling statistics as required; 

  • Help organise and promote library-wide events, and support communications with patrons; 

  • Provide administrative and logistics support for events; 

  • Working outside normal office hours may be required; 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Qualities

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree, and fluency in spoken Cantonese and English.  Those with some of the following attributes have advantages: 

• interest in developing a career in the libraries; 

• university graduates in the past five years or students graduating in 2026 in any discipline; 

• professional qualifications in Library and Information Management, Computer Science, or Data Science and experience in user instructions or research (an asset but not a must); 

• excellent communication and interpersonal skills; 

• high proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese (preferred); 

• outstanding skills in troubleshooting, time management and project management; 

• strong service mentality, self-motivation and team spirit; and 

• an agile and innovative mindset. 

What We Offer

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
