The Director, Deakin Sport Network holds a strategically vital leadership position, responsible for shaping and executing Deakin University's sport strategy across its four foundational pillars research, innovation, education, and employment. This role is instrumental in forging high-impact sectoral partnerships and driving initiatives that elevate Deakin’s national and global reputation in sport. As a key architect of the University’s sport vision, the Director plays a decisive role in aligning sport-related endeavours with institutional priorities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and positioning Deakin as a leader in sport excellence and innovation.
Reporting into the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Partnerships, The Director manages a small team of highly skilled professionals and works collaboratively with academics from all Faculties and professional staff from various Divisions.
As Director, Deakin Sport Network, you will:
- Lead and contribute to the Deakin Sport Network’s strategic direction and foster a collective sense of purpose by illustrating the integration of strategy components and their contribution to higher-level goals.
- Establish key performance indicators consistent with current strategic plans on an annual basis and work with relevant areas Faculty/Division staff to meet agreed targets.
- Ensure the smooth functioning of the six internal stakeholder meetings annually and facilitate active contributions by members of the internal stakeholder group.
- Ensure adequate support is provided to ensure the timely and smooth functioning of the Deakin Sport Network Advisory Board.
- Oversee the client management of the university’s major sport partners and where relevant ensure appropriate negotiation for new partnerships.
- Provide advice to senior leaders, influencing the overall direction, focus, and advancement of substantial programs as they relate to sport at Deakin.
- Represent the university at key sport industry functions, including university sport partners, to ensure high levels of industry engagement to assist foster the objectives of the Deakin Sport Network.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- PhD qualifications and senior academic experiences in a relevant area of sport. A preference for a sport management and marketing focus is desirable.
- Extensive experience conceptualising, developing and implementing strategy and contemporary solutions to achieve Deakin Sport Network objectives commensurate with university goals and objectives.
- A very good knowledge and understanding of contemporary relevant discipline practices.
- Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with relevant sport-focused academics and Faculties, and professional staff and Divisions to engender a collective strategy for sport at Deakin.
- Maintain strong and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, partners and the sport industry in general.
- Proven ability to exercise academic judgment across the sport portfolio where relevant, influence others, be flexible and adaptive to environmental changes and priorities, and gain support for new plans, programs or initiatives.
