Software/AI Engineer

  • Based at our Geelong, Waurn Ponds Campus
  • Part-time (0.6FTE) and fixed term to January 2026
  • HEW 6 $96,276 - $103,971 + 17% Superannuation (pro rata, part time)

  

About the role:

The Software/AI Engineer will support Deakin’s Engineering Services team at ManuFutures by developing software applications and machine learning tools to enable rapid prototyping, product development, and innovation projects.

 As a Software/AI Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop and maintain software tools and lightweight applications to support engineering project outcomes.
  • Apply machine learning, computer vision, or other AI techniques to create functional demonstrators or improve internal workflows.
  • Support data-driven analysis and custom algorithm development for research and industry partner projects.
  • Build simple front-end user interfaces or dashboards to showcase results or enable interactive workflows.
  • Collaborate with the mechatronics engineer to understand system architecture and contribute to software-hardware integration.

 To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field with subsequent relevant experience; or
  • Experience in full-cycle software development, including UI design, version control, testing, and deployment.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Python and relevant AI/ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, scikit-learn).
  • Knowledge and proficient with one or more low-code platforms or rapid prototyping environments (e.g., Streamlit, Power Apps, or Node-RED). Understanding of REST APIs and basic web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript or frameworks like React or Flask).
  • Ability to interpret electronic/mechatronic system schematics and communicate effectively with hardware-focused engineers.
