The Senior Manager, Research Finance plays a key role in building effective partnerships with Deakin’s leadership and teams to deliver forward-thinking, practical solutions in the area of research finance. Operating with decision-making authority guided by established frameworks and governance, the Senior Manager offers expert advice and consultancy across all aspects of their specialisation. The position is highly responsive and customer-focused, requiring tact and diplomacy to influence senior stakeholders and align initiatives with the university’s strategic objectives.
Working closely with Research Accountants, the Director of Research Finance and cross-functional teams, the role ensures timely and accurate recognition of research revenue and expenditure. Reporting to the Director, the Senior Manager also provides strategic advice on complex matters with broader implications for the university.
As the Senior Manager, Research Finance you will:
- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of grant reconciliation, budget allocation/adjustments, revenue accounts/transactions and effective management of philanthropic funding and accuracy of reporting whilst maintaining effective communication with stakeholders.
- Provide support to research community for both external and internal research activities across the University to ensure that research contract, projects and reporting is performed on timely and accurate manner and accordingly to the relevant legislation.
- Support research accountants/leaders with escalations and specialist advice.
- Interpret and apply knowledge of accounting policies and statutory accounting standards and internal policies in day-to-day work while reviewing and interrogating reports to ensure accounting policy & external reporting compliance.
- Understand emerging Research finance and commercial needs and challenges for the higher education sector, and for Deakin University in particular, to support the development of innovative and best practice research finance strategy, policies and initiatives.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience in finance partnering.
- Experience providing high level and complex advice and services to senior Managers through the establishment of meaningful relationships.
- Experience facilitating clients through robust practices to enable strategic thinking and solutions for the future.
- Knowledge of contemporary Partnering and Research practice.
- Experience as a partner or consultant providing specialist knowledge to stakeholders within a business.
