About the role

The Research Engineer works within the fibre and textile group and collaborates with colleagues to ensure the efficient processing, fabrication and characterisation of fibres and textiles for research and commercial contracts. This role involves engaging with academic staff, HDR students, industry partners, and other stakeholders to understand their research needs, design solutions, and deliver outcomes using the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) facilities.

The role is supported by the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) and requires interfacing with the state and national bodies, companies seeking assistance in product development and other organisations that participate in ANFF programs. The successful candidate will need to prepare periodic reports with key performance indicators to meet ANFF obligations, with assistance from other team members.

This is an industry and academic customer facing role which requires excellent time and project management skills. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to work with deadlines, uncertain variables and limited information (at times) to produce valuable outcomes.

As a Research Engineer, you will:

  • Provide expert advice and apply strong technical skills on all matters associated with fibres and textiles to stakeholders, colleagues and team members.
  • Assist staff and students in the design, development, training, manufacture, repair and commissioning of fibre and textile laboratory and pilot processing equipment, and bespoke experimental equipment ensuring research programs run efficiently and effectively.
  • Learn skills and techniques across disciplines, promote technical solutions to modernise work practices and ensure alignment with Deakin’s strategic direction.
  • Clarify expectations and respond promptly to client requests, queries, or complaints to ensure their needs are met while providing technical assistance to staff and students during experiments and research activities.
  • Liaise directly with actual or potential industry partners to explain both IFM/ANFF programs and processes to access research services
  • Prepare reports for the IFM and ANFF as required within stipulated deadlines
  • Participate in trade shows, exhibits, academic conferences and other events as required to promote IFM and ANFF research services

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Degree in fibres and textiles, or relevant discipline (materials, chemical or mechanical engineering) with substantial subsequent relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience and management expertise in technical fields; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience and expertise in fibre and textile instrumentation expertise (production and characterisation).
  • Experience in project management.
