About the role 

The Technical Officer provides a high standard of technical support to the teaching and research programs of the school to ensure that the practical programs are delivered in an efficient manner and that expertise can be provided to assist academic staff and students. The technical support is aligned with molecular biology, genomic, and cellular biology based disciplines and assists the Technical Services Coordinator in the area. 

 
As a Technical Officer, Molecular Biology, you will: 

  • Consult with available sources to gather relevant technical information and seek the expertise and advice of other people as appropriate, to provide technical and research support to practical teaching and research programs of the school, specifically in the (molecular biology, genomic and cellular biology based disciplines to ensure classes run smoothly and that the laboratories and materials are cleaned afterwards.  

  • Provide technical expertise in the operation and maintenance of specialised instrumentation in the discipline area and prepare materials for classes. 

  • Promote and apply Occupational Health and Safety standards across the school environments especially those involving research and teaching laboratory activities. 

  • Coordinate on a day-to-day basis, within the designated area of responsibility, materials and equipment requirements of staff and students for the running of practical teaching classes within the specified disciplines of expertise. 

  • Maintain stock control procedures in conjunction with the Senior Technical Officer on an ongoing basis. 

To be successful, you’ll have:  

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree with majors in a suitable biological science without subsequent relevant work experience; or 

  • Completion of an Associate Diploma and at least two years subsequent relevant work experience; or 

  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, with and emphasis in Molecular and Cellular biology 

  • Experience working in a related field or discipline in higher education or a similar large complex environment. 

  • Good knowledge of OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) (Occupational Health and Safety) principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working with biological and chemical hazards 

  • This position requires the incumbent to hold or be willing to achieve HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
