About the role:
The primary purpose of the Senior Technical Officer is to provide a high standard of technical support to the academic, teaching and research programs for the school ensuring that practical and administrative services are provided in an efficient, safe and effective manner. The positions support is aligned predominantly to the microbiological, molecular and cell science based disciplines units run within the school of Life and Environmental Sciences with support for other disciplines as required.
As a Senior Technical Officer, you will:
- Manage and support the teaching and learning and research facilities
- Assist in the design and development of complex experiments, prepare and develop equipment and manage accurate and up to date written procedures
- Provide expertise to research staff and students in the operation of instrumentation, equipment repair and use and laboratory safety
- Provide day-to-day management of laboratories and teaching spaces, including workflow organisation of practical class support.
- Support the development and delivery of project work, practicals, and other teaching activities in the Molecular Biology discipline to ensure an innovative, engaging and safe student experience.
- Promote and ensure the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible, in particular, those relating to occupational health and safety and risk management
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Bachelor degree in Science with a major in Molecular Biology with subsequent relevant experience;
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience working in a related field or discipline in higher education or a similar large complex environment.
- Good knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working with biological and chemical hazards
- Ability to work with and train research staff and students.
- Experience with genomics, cell culture and histological techniques
