We are exclusively inviting current and former sessional academic individuals who have made valuable contributions to the academic community at Deakin University to apply.

  • Based at our Geelong, Waurn Ponds Campus
  • Full-time and continuing in the school of Medicine
  • Level B $113,157 - $133,837 + 17% Superannuation (pro rata, part-time)

About the role:

The Lecturer will be required to teach, undertake research and publish in the area of optometry and vision science. The appointee will promote the Optometry program and maintain links and partnerships with relevant academic, industry and professional communities. The appointee will make an independent contribution to the School’s teaching, research, and program development whilst making a significant contribution to the development and delivery of Indigenous Health learning and assessment activities, in consultation with the School’s Indigenous Health Professional Education Team. They will work directly with industry placement providers and other stakeholders to develop placement opportunities for student.

 As a Lecturer in Optometry, you will:

  • Lead unit teaching teams and work collaboratively with other unit teaching teams in the course to develop effective unit curricula and learning resources (including through unit leadership roles). Contribute to the review of units and courses and implement refinements.
  • Assist in applying industry, clinical and/or research practice into student learning experiences, success, engagement and resources.
  • Contribute effectively to a culture of educational excellence and engage collaboratively with peers. Build teaching and learning capability related to discipline or pedagogy and effective unit teaching teams and support the professional development of junior colleagues.
  • Complete the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Learning and Teaching as determined by the Head of School.
  • Adopt and promote a culture of research excellence, innovation and impact and support industry partnerships that provide HDRs with industry experience and establish/expand industry networks to create opportunities for placements.

 To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Optometry qualification (eg BOptom, MOptom)
  • PhD in a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience is preferred
  • Current Registration with AHPRA as an Optometrist
  • Therapeutics Endorsement
  • Excellent record of scholarly learning and teaching in UG and/or PG programs, including innovative curriculum design
  • Competence in developing and delivering Indigenous Health learning and assessment activities, in consultation with the School’s Indigenous Health Professional Education Team.
  • Capacity to contribute to leadership of research and administration.
