About the role:
The Mechanical Engineer plays a hands-on and collaborative role in the ManuFutures Engineering Services team by delivering end-to-end mechanical design, prototyping, and product development services. Working in close collaboration with internal engineering staff, Deakin researchers, and industry clients, the position requires a hands-on, solutions-oriented mindset and the ability to adapt engineering expertise to dynamic, commercially relevant problems.
As a Mechatronics Engineer, you will:
- Support mechanical design and development activities on industry and research-aligned projects, applying best practices in CAD, prototyping, and DFM/DFA principles.
- Translate project briefs into tangible technical solutions, including product feasibility, component selection, materials optimisation, and tolerance analysis.
- Apply commercial and manufacturing awareness to guide early-stage product design toward scalable outcomes.
- Provide hands-on support with mechanical assembly, system integration, and functional testing of prototypes.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Degree in mechanical engineering with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Sound knowledge of OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) (Occupational Health and Safety) principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working with biological and chemical hazards.
- Demonstrated experience in product development, prototyping, and design-for-manufacture principles.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and documentation of engineering drawings for manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, component sourcing, and real-world assembly constraints.
