About the team and role:
Research Finance supports all the financial activities relating to research at Deakin University by facilitating both internal and external funding contributions made. A team that provides trusted advice on all matters relating to research while partnering with researchers to maximise their research funding. The internal team create financial reports for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research portfolio and collaborate with each leader within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research portfolio and the external team assist the researchers from each of the Faculties and Institutes with their funding
The Management Accountant, Clinical Trials Hub is responsible for the delivery of the annual budget and forecast submissions, staff management plans, monthly reporting (including dashboards and metrics), reconciliations, analysis and interpretation of variances, completion of financial reports and advice on forecast and budget management. In addition, the position will ensure a high standard, culture and practice for application of research expenditure and subsequent financial reporting and acquittals to ensure activity reflects and is in accordance with grant and contract funding rules and represents the most efficient utilisation of Deakin resources.
As a Management Accountant, you will:
- Liaise with external partners to maintain communication and coordinate information sharing; prepare and submit timely reports; oversee commercial payments, ensuring accuracy and resolving issues; and coordinate audits, ensuring compliance and accurate records.
- Actively participate and contribute to successful delivery of tailored finance business services and high-quality financial support to the Deakin Clinical Trails Hub, including advice and guidance on more complex grants and other research arrangements particularly those featuring the provision of in-kind resourcing, multi-institutional and/or international participation. Embrace and uphold the customer engagement model ensuring excellent customer service and close engagement to deliver high quality financial support and services.
- Deliver the annual budget and forecast submissions, staff management plans, monthly reporting (including dashboards and metrics), reconciliations, analysis and interpretation of variances, completion of financial reports and advice on forecast and budget management.
- Utilise available finance expertise from within the specialised finance service offerings of Finance & Assurance to deliver sound, pragmatic and executable financial and commercial recommendations and solutions.
- Maintain a high standard, culture and practice for application of research expenditure and subsequent financial reporting and acquittals to ensure activity reflects and is in accordance with grant and contract funding rules compliant with Deakin policies and represents the most efficient utilisation of Deakin university wide resources. Includes supporting the establishment, documentation and implementation of best practise end-to-end grant accounting processes to ensure all associated financial transactions are administered efficiently, effectively, accurately, and fully reconcilable.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- Certified Practising Accountant / Chartered Accountant
- Previous experience at a senior administrative level in financial administration and related activities, preferably in a university or other large organisation with complex administrative structures, policies and procedures.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with experience in financial modelling, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Experience in clinical trial financial administration, research finance, or project accounting within a large complex environment is highly desirable.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial software and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
