About the job
In this key leadership role, you’ll bring your expertise in contemporary health and safety, people leadership and management, and a strong understanding of higher education environments to advance the delivery of contemporary customer focused health and safety support and services across Deakin University.
Reporting to the Director, Health and Safety, and operating through a leader-practitioner approach, you will provide expert advice, drive strategy and planning, and lead a high-performing team dedicated to delivering exceptional services and innovative solutions.
As the Senior Manager, Health and Safety, you will:
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of skilled health and safety professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment that delivers expert, customer focused partnering support and services for all areas of the University.
- Provide strategic leadership and direction of the University’s health and safety function, ensuring robust processes that deliver compliant, practical and customer focused outcomes.
- Oversee the effective application, management and assurance of the University’s Health and Safety management system and frameworks, including risk assessment and hazard management, reporting and investigations.
- Partner with senior leaders to embed health and safety into operational and strategic decision-making, and act as a trusted expert providing authoritative guidance on complex health and safety matters, emerging risks, legislation, standards and best practices.
- Establish and maintain robust governance and reporting mechanisms, including internal and external reporting, inspections, audits and performance metrics.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- Proven expertise in the management of significant human and material resources
- Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of contemporary Occupational Health and Safety legislation, standards
- Significant management experience in the tertiary education sector and in dealing with staff and student matters from a central administration and/or Faculty based perspective
- Demonstrated experience of leadership and management of staff, including staff development, performance planning and review, delegation and performance improvement
