About the Role

The Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) plays a vital leadership and support role within the General Surgical Ward. Working collaboratively with the Nurse Unit Manager and wider multidisciplinary team, the ANUM helps to ensure safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care. 

The ANUM will work as part of the ward’s leadership team. The role includes both direct clinical care and leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership & Coordination Support the Nurse Unit Manager in managing the day-to-day operations of the ward.
  • Act as a clinical resource and point of escalation during the shift.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to nursing staff, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective care.
  • Participate in the coordination of patient care, bed management, and multidisciplinary team communication.
  • Direct Patient Care Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients in the general surgical ward.
  • Support staff with clinical interventions, care planning, and complex decision-making.
  • Promote a patient- and family-centered approach in all aspects of care.
  • Staff Support & Teamwork Assist in staff supervision, task delegation, and team coordination during shifts.
  • Support graduate nurses, students, and less experienced staff through informal mentoring and role modelling.
  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture that values respect, learning, and collaboration.
  • Communication & Collaboration liaise with medical, allied health, and support services to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Promote clear and respectful communication within the team.
  • Participate in handovers, team meetings, and unit discussions.
  • Governance & Compliance Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with legal, professional, and hospital requirements.
  • Contribute to incident reporting, quality improvement, and safety initiatives.
  • Uphold infection prevention, OH&S, and risk management protocols. 

 

 About you

  • Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum 5 years of acute clinical experience, preferably in acute or surgical nursing.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and provide leadership in clinical settings (e.g. experience as Nurse-in-Charge or team leader).
  • Strong problem-solving, clinical decision-making, and prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster effective teamwork.
  • Commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • A positive, motivated attitude with a willingness to learn, grow, and contribute to a supportive team environment.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications in management, surgical nursing, or a related field.
  • Experience working with gender diverse populations or communities, with an understanding of inclusive and affirming care practices.
  • Working Conditions: This position includes a mix of morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts.

 

Remuneration: On offer is base hourly rate ranging from $55.92+ superannuation based on experience level and qualifications, exclusive of penalties or allowances.

Requirements

  • Must provide a National Police Check conducted within the previous 12 months
