The Opportunity
We are seeking an outstanding Director of Emergency Medicine to lead our Emergency Department at St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital, overseeing a team of around 30 doctors and ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient and high-quality patient care. This role combines clinical leadership with operational oversight, workforce management and continuous improvement to strengthen emergency services across the hospital.
The Director will work closely with colleagues, Visiting Medical Officers and external partners to ensure effective patient flow, uphold clinical governance and foster a culture of collaboration and excellence.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Lead the planning, development and continuous improvement of emergency and acute services, including innovation in clinical processes and models of care.
- Oversee admissions and patient flow through effective triage, coordination with inpatient teams, VMOs, GPs and Ambulance, and implementation of best-practice systems.
- Manage budgets, resources and funding arrangements while ensuring strong clinical governance, compliance, medico-legal oversight and quality outcomes.
- Build strong relationships across hospital services and external stakeholders, while supporting staff education, professional development and active participation in hospital committees.
Leadership, Management & Communication
- Build cohesive teams through effective communication, consultation and collaboration with staff, VMOs and key stakeholders.
- Oversee staff performance, ensuring timely reviews, constructive feedback, recognition of achievement and proactive management of performance gaps.
- Support professional growth and wellbeing through orientation, mandatory education, and opportunities for ongoing development.
Workforce Management
- Lead workforce planning to identify current and future staffing needs, including recruitment, retention and succession strategies.
- Oversee rostering and labour allocation to ensure safe, efficient and cost-effective service delivery across all shifts.
- Align education, training and professional development with departmental and organisational priorities.
Key Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, with postgraduate qualifications in Emergency Medicine
- Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
- Current AHPRA registration
- Five years’ experience in acute health care facility as an emergency physician
- Sound understanding of professional and legislative requirements in a health care setting
