Recognizing that institutions of higher education have a responsibility to lead and help shape the future, Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) actively pursues sustainability as a strategic approach to support its goals of increasing student recruitment and retention. This is achieved through courses that address contemporary and global issues, promote responsible resource use, and emphasize fiscal stewardship. PPSC envisions becoming a recognized leader in sustainability by integrating principles of social sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into its institutional policies, programs, and practices.

The Sustainability Coordinator plays a central role in this vision, collaborating with administrators, faculty, staff, and students to foster a culture of sustainability across campus and in the broader community. This role oversees the daily operations of the Office of Sustainability (OoS), including budget management, supervision of student staff, advising the Sustainability Club leadership, and coordinating campus events, communications, and partnerships that align with the college’s sustainability goals.

Additionally, the Sustainability Coordinator chairs the Sustainability Task Force—a key body guiding and advancing sustainability efforts in both campus operations and culture.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; motor vehicle check required as condition of employment.

The college offers the possibility for alternative work arrangements such as flexplace, remote work, or flextime scheduling upon completion of training and department needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed baccalaureate degree in environmental management, environmental science and engineering, environmental studies, geography, industrial engineering, strategic planning, urban planning, OR completed associate degree with two years of professional level experience performing similar duties to those described for this position.
  • One year of demonstrated hands-on experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment; must demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience with computer and software applications relating to office management, including word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed master’s degree in environmental management, environmental science and engineering, environmental studies, geography, industrial engineering, strategic planning, urban planning, or another related field.
  • Two years of professional experience working in a higher education setting with traditional and non-traditional college students.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking, facilitating workshops, or small group facilitation.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development, management, analysis, data collection, and assessment.
  • Supervisory Experience
  • Experience implementing sustainability methods and practices in a business, non-profit, or educational setting.
  • • Proficiency with technology to include marketing strategies/public relations, web-based content management, and social networking media.
  • Ability to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Knowledge of campus and community referral resources.

Essential Functions 

Management of the Office of Sustainability

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive sustainability plan for the institution.
  • Manage sustainability activities in line with the college’s mission and strategic plan. 
  • Reinstate and lead the Sustainability Task Force to set institutional goals, objectives, and develop sustainability reporting mechanisms both within PPSC and to the greater community.
  • Implement college-wide sustainability strategies/objectives from sustainability plan.

Budget Administration

  • Administer the office’s operating budget.
  • Manage program budgets, tracking spending, and authorizing expenditures.

Staffing and Supervision

  • Determine student staffing needs and manage the recruitment, onboarding, training, and termination processes.
  • Supervise and assess performance student staff annually.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship through scheduled meetings.

Programs and Partnerships

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key groups across campus, including but not limited to Facilities Services, Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL), Career Services, Student Services, etc. and others as may be hired to identify and prioritize energy efficiency and retrofit projects. Manage and apply funds, track and report on performance.
  • Participate as a committee member to facilitate the implementation of programs, projects, and initiatives associated with the development of partnerships as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison to the City of Colorado Springs and the greater community in consultation with the Director of Student Experience.

Program Coordination

  • Disposal and recycling programs, signature events, and programs throughout the semesters.
  • Track program results; manage recycling budget; manage services provided by outside vendors.
  • Work with the campus community to institutionalize a culture of sustainability and increase the ecological literacy of PPSC community members.
  • Facilitate presentations in classes and public forums, and partner with faculty to help direct independent study, and service learning. Coordinate behavioral educational/outreach programming/events centered on sustainability in collaboration with the Student Experience Department.

Administrative Support

  • Maintain prompt and regular communication with stakeholders (i.e. – email, etc..
  • Purchasing and procurement for office goods, student clubs, etc.
  • Plan and coordinate internal and external office events. Sit on sustainability-related technical or advisory groups representing the OoS (i.e. Food Advisory Council, Tree Advisory Council, Sustainability Operational Group, etc.)
  • Work with Marketing in maintaining the Office of Sustainability website and oversee communications campaigns.
  • Document and publicize sustainability progress through outlets that include but are not limited to websites, interviews with media, presentations at local and national conferences, and a sustainability e-mail newsletter.

Advising Student Clubs

  • Serve as a club advisor (non-academic) to any student sustainability club, that has been a recognized by the Student Engagement & Leadership office as an official PPSC sponsored organization.
  • Meet with clubs on regular basis, check-ins and goal setting.
  • Provide guidance and support to student clubs focused on sustainability.
  • Oversee financial requests, provide training, and grant approvals for student clubs.

Community Engaged Learning Opportunities

  • Strategize, implement, and maintain service-learning and volunteer programs. 
  • Develop program assessments for continuous evaluation and improvement. 
  • Manage program budgets, tracking and monitoring spending, and authorizing expenditures as appropriate.
  • Other duties as may be assigned

  • Ability to travel between campuses and work a flexible schedule as needed.
