Temporary Lab Assistant: Animal Programs

Salary: $17 - $19 per hour

The Science, Engineering, and Math Department is seeking part-time lab assistants for the Zoo Keeping Technology and Veterinary Assistant labs. Positions will assist in the care and husbandry of the animal collection on site.

This is a temporary part-time hourly position, not to exceed 28 hours per week.   

Ability to work evenings and weekends to support animal and department needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed High School Diploma or completed GED. 
  • Two semesters of Zookeeping Technology, in addition to biology or environmental science with passing grade(s)
  • Basic record keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Additional years of experience in a zoological lab or conservation initiatives.

Essential Functions

Lab Operations & Support

  • Cleaning, scrubbing/disinfecting enclosures and dishes.
  • Diet preparation and feeding.
  • Additional duties pertaining to the role as assigned.

Administrative & Technical Duties 

  • Assist in data collection and entry.
  • Organize and maintain lab documentation including class requisitions, inventory logs, and cleaning duty lists.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Work is often performed in a variety of settings, frequently in a lab or controlled environment, caring for animals. Work hours vary with the needs of the animal collection, animals, and programs.

Requires occasional physical effort such as lifting, handling enclosures, working with reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and other various taxa along with extensive walking/standing.

Evening or weekend work may be required.

General Duties, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of animal care and husbandry practices.
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in cleaning and caring for animals.
  • Ability to understand and recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior, indicators of stress, social dominance, reproductive behavior, territoriality, etc.
  • Ability to interface professionally with coworkers.
  • Ability to cope with the physical demands of the profession (i.e. must be able to lift 50 pounds, stand for prolonged periods of time, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed to support animal care.

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.
