JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing and the Nurse Manager, this position provides professional nursing care and health services, including nursing assessments, examinations, and treatment. Provides patient-focused advice and education. Conducts health promotion and educational outreach. Collaborates with other providers to enable the student to attain and maintain health. As a college health nurse, this position supports the maintenance and improvement of the health of students, identifying and assisting in removing or modifying health-related barriers and supporting early detection and early intervention strategies. Refers students to other resources as appropriate; maintains electronic medical records and ensures compliance with state laws and regulations, SHaW policies and procedures, and program protocols.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interview patients, document medical history, examine patients, and make assessments and/or nursing diagnoses of the condition of such patients. Counsels the patient regarding treatment and prevention.
  • Collaborate with patients and the Health Care Team to formulate a tailored plan ensuring they receive timely and comprehensive care that meets their needs. Act as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that patients’ needs and preferences are communicated effectively.
  • Track patient progress and communicate updates to the health care team, adjusting care plans as necessary. Help with adherence to care plans, adjust guidance as needed. Provide clinical education to patients and their support systems about diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect during visit(s)
  • Offer emotional support and assist patients/families in accessing community resources, financial aid, and support groups to alleviate the burden of medical treatment, helping them cope with the stress and anxiety associated with a variety of health conditions.
  • Consults with physicians and APRN’s for evaluations and recommendations for unusual findings, may refer patient for specialized medical care beyond the scope of the Student Health Service, including arranging necessary ambulance transportation. Provide necessary emergency care as indicated by protocol.
  • Coordinates various aspects of patient care, including scheduling appointments, arranging tests and procedures, and managing follow-up care, appropriate support services, including information about insurance/billing and transportation.
  • Administers medications, immunizations, treatments and certain tests via established protocols as authorized by licensed physicians and APRN’s.
  • Participates in and/or conducts in-service presentations. Participates in various SHaW and University committees and advisory groups.
  • Maintains accurate and timely clinical records and reports.
  • Maintains drugs, medical supplies, and equipment as necessary.
  • Mentors other nonprofessionals during work assignments.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of CT.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field.
  • 3 years of experience, within the last 5 years, providing comprehensive nursing care to adolescent/young adults in an ambulatory care, school health or urgent care setting, conducting physical assessments, monitoring vital signs, administering treatments and medications, educating patients about disease management and self-care, and collaborating with providers as well as other healthcare professionals to implement care plans.
  • Nursing experience applicable to the assigned work area.
  • Utilization of an electronic health record.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising independent judgment and decision-making.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Must have a demonstrated understanding of and a stated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity issues.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a College Health Setting.
  • Experience providing Nursing Telephone Advice/Triage.
  • IV placement skills.
  • Experience delivering immunotherapy in an allergy clinic.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This opening is for a 9-month full-time permanent position.  9-month appointments typically work mid-August through mid-May and include three months of paid summer leave. Schedule would be day shifts and include every other Saturday as part of a rotation during the academic semesters.  Schedule transitions to Monday through Friday, 8 am - 4 pm, during academic breaks. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
