Job Description

VTTI seeks a qualified and ambitious research engineer interested in answering complex problems through application of advanced research, development, and implementation techniques. The candidate should have an aptitude for framing research questions, working with complex novel systems, applying appropriate data analysis techniques, and developing robust solutions. The candidate should be an experienced research engineer, or equivalent, capable of working independently and with multidisciplinary teams to improve transportation safety through cutting-edge research and early stage field deployment.

This opening seeks an applicant with a diverse background, demonstrating a unique skillset that can be applied to the development and implementation of advanced transportation systems. We are building an effective team with experience and interests in transportation-related areas such as automated vehicle systems, connected vehicle systems and related technologies (DSRC, C-V2X, 5G), infrastructure technology, micromobility solutions, and vulnerable road users. The candidate shall have demonstrable expertise in technical proposal development, project operations, data analysis, budgeting, and project management. Some programming background is a plus.

Required Qualifications

Masters degree. Candidates with a lesser degree and significant experience in lieu of master’s degree will also be considered.

Demonstrable experience in transportation research or equivalent experience within a related field

Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and within teams

Firm understanding of engineering principles needed to analyze, verify, and interpret work

Preferred Qualifications

Project Management experience, qualified to lead project teams and oversee project schedule, budgets, and deliverables.

Background in data processing and analysis.

Experience with proposal development and strong written skills

Familiarity with automated vehicle systems and associated research protocols

Proficient in data collection, processing, and statistical analysis (e.g., SAS, R, python, etc).

The successful Candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.  VTTI would prefer that this position be based in the New River Valley of Virginia, but will consider alternate locations.
