The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering (AOE) invites applications for the position of Department Head effective August 2022. Candidates should have demonstrated intellectual and organizational leadership skills that will further elevate our premier research and education programs in aerospace and ocean engineering.
Virginia Tech’s department of aerospace and ocean engineering includes nearly 4 dozen tenure-line, collegiate, and research faculty members, 2 dozen staff members, more than 300 graduate students, and more than 700 undergraduate students. With annual research expenditures of $11M, AOE is among the most research-active departments in Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering. The department’s highly decorated faculty members lead globally respected research programs in aero/hydrodynamics; aeroacoustics; computational mechanics; dynamics, control, & estimation; propulsion; space systems engineering; and structures & materials. Strategic thrust areas include autonomous systems, cyberphysical security, environmentally responsible systems, renewable energy, small satellites and space-based sensing, and national security. Researchers leverage uniquely capable department facilities and institutional investments in Virginia Tech’s National Security Institute and its Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science. The department’s strong aerospace program (13th undergraduate and 15th graduate -- USN&WR 2022) is complemented by an exceptional program in ocean engineering, with faculty and students routinely working across the disciplines.
Candidates must be eligible for tenure at the rank of Professor. In addition to an earned Ph.D. in engineering or a closely related discipline, the candidate must have achieved national or international distinction in scholarship and have demonstrated proficiency in teaching and mentorship at a level commensurate with accredited undergraduate and graduate engineering programs. The successful candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability and willingness to collaborate with others in scholarship, education, and service, and a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive culture that welcomes and cultivates diversity.
The ideal candidate will have a clear record of successful leadership within a research enterprise. Aspects of such leadership include the development of a shared strategic vision and the realization of that vision through strong advocacy within and beyond the university and through the cultivation of a diverse, highly capable, and harmonious workforce.
