Job Description

The Aylward lab at Virginia Tech is seeking a Research Scientist interested in the ecology, evolution, and genomics of DNA viruses. Responsibilities include a sizable leadership role that will necessitate independent research as well as mentorship of postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the lab, as well as searching and applying for external funding, where appropriate. The researcher will have the opportunity to work in several areas of ongoing research in the laboratory, including the isolation and genomic analysis of giant viruses and other DNA viruses, cultivation of diverse hosts, analysis of evolutionary relationships and genomic repertoires of different viral groups, and the development of bioinformatic methods for genomic and evolutionary analyses. The research will address critical questions regarding the evolution and interaction of viruses with bacterial and protist hosts in nature. Candidates will lead their own independent research projects and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. Experience with both experimental and computational approaches is desirable, as is proficiency in widely-used microbiological methods. Required Qualifications

PhD in relevant field (microbiology, genomics, etc. )
Knowledge and enthusiasm for microbial evolution and genomics
Experience developing materials for publications

Preferred Qualifications

Previous postdoc experience
Experience working with cultures of bacteria/algae/viruses
Experience with a coding language (preferably Python or R) and working with bioinformatic workflows.
Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
