Job Description

Virginia Tech seeks a Research Administration Training and Development Specialist to develop and foster training, development and outreach initiatives in support of research financial and non-financial administration and compliance activities. This position will support the research administration, compliance and scholarly integrity efforts to minimize financial, contractual and regulatory exposure. In pursuit of this mission, this position will serve as an integral partner with the university’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance (SIRC) division in providing resources to internal stakeholders. Research is a fundamental part of the university’s mission and OSP and SIRC are key partners in oversight and support of faculty research efforts.

OSP’s mission is to provide a comprehensive array of support services for faculty and staff as they pursue and manage external funding projects. SIRC’s mission is to facilitate scholarly excellence by fostering ethical decision-making and ensure research regulatory compliance.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Sponsored Programs, with a dotted line reporting to the Associate Vice President for Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance, the Research Administration Training and Development Specialist will foster cross functional partners to design, develop, scale, deliver and evaluate training needs provided by OSP and SIRC. The specialist is expected to be innovative and passionate about developing people and delivering training programs using current tools and trends in learning (especially the complexity of virtual learning and meaningfully connecting with dispersed teams in a remote work environment), as well as facilitating discussions with leaders, and project planning the design and execution of large-scale learning events.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field or a Bachelor’s degree and significant experience in instructional design, training, and development or workforce/adult education.
• Considerable experience with program management, development of training modules, and presentation of training programs. Experience with computer software used in developing and presenting training programs.
• Accomplished trainer and facilitator, strong speaker.
• Strong influence, negotiation, creative problem solving, and people management skills to navigate various viewpoints and develop consensus.
• Possess broad knowledge of research administration regulatory requirements.
• Well versed in adult learning principles and teaching methods.
• Versed in appropriate organization of training materials (DDI, Bloom’s Taxonomy).
• Proficient in various prescriptive instructional design methodologies (ADDIE, SAM, AGILE, etc.) in the delivery of a variety of communication methods.
• Ability to manage a variety of projects with varying levels of complexity to successful completion with minimal supervision.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to relate to people at all levels and a variety of working styles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Have a certified research administration credential (CRA) or other research compliance certification (e.g., CIP, CPIA).
• Certified Professional in Training Management (CPTM) or Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP).
• Project management or process improvement mechanisms.
• Experience developing and facilitating training programs in a research or academic environment.
• Familiarity with the application of the Code of Federal Regulations, federal circulars, and major agency policies and regulations.

Position is eligible for a hybrid/remote work arrangement and the details of remote work will be negotiated upon an offer.
