The Roofing Apprentice will assist with and learn to become proficient in the performance of tasks in the installation and maintenance of commercial roofing systems such as Standing Seam and other types of metal roofing, EPDM, TPO and PVC on the Blacksburg campus. Additionally, this position assists in the Building Trades Shop with carpentry, masonry and paint projects as assigned.
• Ability to take classes online and complete specified course work, independently and on schedule.
• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or more with assistance; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; and work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
• Ability to communicate effectively, have good team work skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
• May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
• This is a designated emergency personnel position.
• Must successfully achieve a minimum of a Bronze rating on WorkKeys assessment.
• Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
• Will be required to operate a motor vehicle daily
• Experience in a large commercial or educational setting
• Good working knowledge of industrial roofing
• Experience with TPO roofing systems
$32,760; commensurate with experience

• Must have a driver's license check
• This position is designated as Emergency Personnel
• Must be available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to provide support during planned events or emergency situations (such as inclement weather) to include being physically on site if deemed necessary.
• This position meets the criteria for issuance of a mobile communication device (such as radio, cellphone, iPad, iPod, pager, etc.). Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment. Devices are to be used according to supervisor instruction and according to relevant policies.
• As situation dictates, must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Must wear employer provided uniforms as instructed by supervisor or lead.
• Use/wearing of a respirator will be required.
• Must have annual health and safety medical check.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
