Job Description

The Gnotobiotic Specialist helps create and maintain a controlled, sterile environment for research animals. This position provides support to the Animal Care and Operations Supervisor with the daily operations and management of the gnotobiotic animal facilities to include training, supplies ordering, isolator maintenance, and resource scheduling and allocation. The Gnotobiotic Specialist requires specialized skills associated with the care and handling of animals; sanitation of facilities in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures; and performs basic and advanced technical animal procedures under minimal to no supervision.

Key Job Responsibilities:
•Assist the Animal Care and Operations Supervisor in managing the projects and equipment utilized in the gnotobiotic facility, including development and design of specialized animal environments and recommendations for gnotobiotic husbandry practices and procedures
•Provide gnotobiotic training to animal technicians, research staff, and veterinary staff to include, but not limited to: facility training, proper equipment use training, sterilization of supplies
•Build, repair, and troubleshoot gnotobiotic isolator issues. Maintain detailed records to ensure rotation of replacement parts according to set time points
•Provide daily care and maintenance for animals that require unique skillsets or highly specialized management, oversight, or housing systems such as gnotobiotic animals. Provides fresh feed, water and environmental enrichment to animals. Performs animal housing, isolator and procedure area sanitation, recognizes normal environmental room parameters (e.g. temperature, humidity, light levels, airflow, etc.) and reports abnormal conditions to the appropriate individual in a timely manner. Recognizes normal clinical appearance and behavior of animals and reports any concerns to the veterinary staff or designate.
•Performs veterinary and other technical procedures including but not limited to animal handling and/or restraint, animal identification procedures, administration of substances by various routes, surgical preparation, anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care, euthanasia, and collection of blood or tissues.
•Provides applicable training for ARCD and research personnel in animal care procedures, cage wash procedures, and established ARCD guidance documents (SOPs and policies).
•All other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Associates degree in Animal Science or a similar biological science.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level.
• Demonstrated experience working with gnotobiotic animals in a laboratory animal research facility
• Demonstrated experience in sterile technique and with maintenance of sterile work areas.
• Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment, animal caging, and other equipment commonly utilized throughout a lab animal facility
• Ability to lift/move 50 pounds.
• Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g. email, Word, Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or a similar biological science
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level
• Experience working with farm animals for locations that support agricultural species.
• Solid technical knowledge of gnotobiotic facility program management
• Previous training experience

Given the nature of this position, the work site will be on campus in Blacksburg, VA.
