Job Description

The Department of Food Science & Technology at Virginia Tech seeks enthusiastic candidates for a non-tenure track Associate Extension Specialist faculty position. The Food Science & Technology Department is a dynamic, collaborative, and tight-knit community of scientist educators that currently includes 26 faculty (14 Tenure-track) with a set if unique and diverse skills. Our department is focused in three mission areas: research, extension and teaching.


This AP faculty position supports the Extension mission in the Food Science & Technology Department. This mission includes providing education, support and leadership across the state through Virginia Cooperative Extension in the areas of consumer, retail and local food inspired food safety needs. The position will directly support the delivery of ServSafe, the Master Food Volunteer program as well as programming targeted to farmers markets, food recovery organizations and others as needed. Primary emphasis will be in developing and delivering programs/resources for Extension agents using a train-the-trainer model and providing leadership in delivery, data collection and impact of these programs statewide. This position will work with other VCE specialists/agents and other agencies as needed to provide intradisciplinary leadership for related program areas. Additionally, this position will have emphasis on writing or collaborating on grants and seeking additional resources to support the Extension mission of the department. The candidate will be expected to serve on departmental, college, or university committees as a contributing member of the department and the broader university community

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Food Science or related field; Strong knowledge and background in food safety; Experience working with Extension agents and delivering food safety related content to the public; Experience writing extension related publications/curriculum; Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Volunteer development knowledge

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Food Science or related field; Experience conducting human research; Experience writing peer reviewed manuscripts; ServSafe Certification and HACCP course completion; Nutrition education knowledge
