The Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech seeks applications for two (2) nine-month faculty appointments at the rank of Instructor, Advanced or Senior Instructor, depending on experience, to begin in August 2024. Promotion opportunities within instructor ranks are available. Individuals will support the department’s teaching mission through delivery of large 1000- and/or 2000-level courses to majors and/or Pathways general education students.
Potential courses include Principles of Biology (I, II), Evolutionary Biology, Cell Function and Differentiation, Genetics, Ecology, General Microbiology, Zoology and Plant Biology. The position is located on Blacksburg campus with in-person and possibly online course modalities. Individuals teaching the Principles of Biology courses will collaborate with the introductory biology instructional team to design, develop, and teach in the Principles of Biology Active Classroom, and will mentor undergraduate teaching assistants. In addition to teaching, the position will contribute to the department through select service activities related to student engagement, undergraduate mentoring, curriculum design, and governance.

● Doctoral degree in biological sciences, life science, or related field
● Demonstrated success teaching college-level biology courses
● Experience developing classroom and/or laboratory learning activities
● Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment
● Experience using Canvas Learning Management System or similar
● Experience with curriculum design and development
● Experience with online/distance learning
● Familiarity with evidence-based teaching approaches and pedagogy
● Experience teaching large (100+ student) courses
● Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to take
initiative in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
Commensurate with experience but within budget maximum
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
