Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech has an open 12-month Clinical or tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. This position involves teaching in the preclinical and clinical veterinary curriculum, diagnostic clinical microbiology in the Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services, supporting infection control programs in the veterinary teaching hospital and research. The department and college have a strong, vibrant, nationally and internationally recognized microbiology research program. The instructional responsibilities include teaching microbiology in the DVM professional program, and there will be opportunities to teach graduate and resident-level courses consistent with the candidate’s and college’s focus. Opportunities also exist to train clinical residents and/or Ph.D. students. Collaborative research in infectious diseases in the following areas is especially encouraged: zoonotic diseases, natural and experimental animal models of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine development, and mechanisms of infectious disease resistance or susceptibility. Clinical diagnostic microbiology duties include clinical orientation and training in bacteriology/mycology, virology, and serology in a diagnostic laboratory setting; experience in QA/QC in veterinary microbiology; supervision of diagnostic laboratory staff in bacteriology, virology, and mycology, serology; evaluation of case histories with appropriate, timely suggestions to clientele, and recommendations on new technologies relative to microbiology assays. Required Qualifications

The required qualifications are DVM or equivalent, diplomate of ACVM- Bacteriology/Mycology and/or Virology (or ACVM eligible) and MS or Ph.D. in Microbiology, and experience in a veterinary diagnostic lab or relative work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced training in Clinical Microbiology. Diplomate of ACVM. Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services is an AAVLD accredited lab and a member of USDA NAHLN and FDA Vet-LIRN; therefore, experience with ISO 17025 standards is expected. The candidate will join a progressive department and college with a strong microbiology-research faculty therefore interest and experience in research is desired. There are opportunities to develop collaborative research programs within the college and with other life sciences-oriented departments, colleges, and institutes on campus.
