Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech seeks a strategic leader, established scientist, and accomplished educator to serve as its Department Head. The Department Head will serve on the College Executive Board and be responsible for all aspects of the department’s academic mission in research, instruction, outreach, and clinical diagnostics. This involves supervision of faculty and staff and administrative responsibilities for planning, fiscal management and communication. The Department is guided by a vision to achieve national distinction in biomedical research that involves One Health medicine, specifically in infectious disease, inflammatory and immunological diseases, neuroscience and regenerative medicine; diagnostic medicine and professional services; and professional and graduate student instruction. https://vetmed.vt.edu/departments/biomedical-sciences-and-pathobiology.html

In addition to departmental leadership responsibilities, the Head is expected to contribute personally to the teaching and/or service missions of the Department and maintain scholarly contributions that are nationally recognized. The Department Head is a full-time, twelve-month administrative leadership position that reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to provide creative leadership for faculty development in areas of teaching, research, and diagnostic services. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to effectively represent and promote the Department and its faculty, as well as participate in teaching, research, and/or diagnostic services. Other important duties include leadership of staff employees and resource management. The anticipated appointment will be for five years with successful performance, and subject to renewal at five-year intervals.

Required Qualifications

PhD or DVM degree (or equivalent); Experience with diagnostic medicine/services; A strong record of leading an active biomedical research program; A strong record of delivering professional/graduate veterinary medical and/or biomedical teaching; Demonstrated effective leadership, communication, and administrative abilities; Demonstration of scholarly accomplishments at the rank of tenured Associate Professor or Professor

Preferred Qualifications

Strong leadership of a research program with sustained extramural funding beyond five years; Evidence of leading an interdisciplinary research team
